Panchkarma

Meaning : Vasant ritu is the season for cleansing of doshas accumulated in winter season. Pravrut ritu (Early monsoon) is the season for cleansing of doshas accumulated in summer season. Sharad ritu (Autum) is the season for cleansing of doshas accumulated in rainy season (Late monsoon). The ultimate use of this procedure is to keep oneself healthy even during seasonal changes.


Shodhan Chikitsa (Panchakarma)

These are purificatory procedures indicated to remove the vitiated dosha out of the body also known as the “Panchakarma”. Theee are many other procedures included in this term but the following five indicate the main Panchakarma i.e the five procedures.

  • Snehana
    » External- In this oil massages are conducted.
    » Internal – In this medicated ghee is advised to be taken orally
  • Swedana
    In this sweating is induced after giving massages with herbal steam.

Vaman

This is the purificatory procedure in which dosha from the body are eliminated from oral route by giving the medications orally.

Virechan

This is the purificatory procedure in which dosha are eliminated from anal route by giving the medications orally.

Basti

This is the purificatory procedure in which dosha are eliminated from anal route by giving the medications through the same route.

» Joint pain
» Constipation
» Paralysis

» Cancer
» Diabetes



Nasya

This is the purificatory procedure in which medications are given through the nasal route. In Ayurved, nose is considered as a gateway to brain and any medicines given through nose reaches there and shows its action on brain.

Raktamokshan

This is the purificatory procedure in which doshas are removed by bloodletting with the help of Jalauka( leeches) / needles.

Shirodhara

In this procedure stream of warm oils is allowed to flow over the forehead for complete relaxation.

Janubasti

In this procedure medicated warm oils are pooled over the knee joints with a special arrangement

Katibasti

In this procedure medicated warm oils are pooled over the back with a special arrangement.

In this process a bolus of herbs and rice is made and fomentation is given using that.
